The Auburn Automobile Company grew out of the Eckhart Carriage Company founded in Auburn, Indiana in 1874 by Charles Eckhart. Eckhart’s sons sold the company in 1919 who in turn sold to Errett Cord in 1924. He began a successful company making Auburns, Duesenbergs and Cords.

The Auburn Boattail Speedster was the sleekest car in the company’s history. The style along with the fact that it had a supercharged engine enabling it to top 100 mph made it a popular model in the Hollywood market.

Cord’s vehicles were too expensive for the Depression era market and the company folded in 1937 stopping production of their autos.

Luxury autos in the 1930’s had hood ornaments that began as radiator caps and continued after the radiator went under the hood. This painting is inspire by the Auburn hood ornament.
